Re: Frame at AUT: Beyond the Numbers

Today, NOYIFF brought Re: Frame On-Campus Screening to Auckland University of Technology (AUT), presenting seven award-winning short films from emerging filmmakers around the world, followed by an open conversation about filmmaking, visual storytelling and the industry.

The timing, admittedly, wasn’t exactly on our side. Our screening happened to fall right in the middle of AUT’s exam period. Campus was noticeably quieter, and the audience was smaller than we had originally hoped.

But something else surprised us.

Most of the people who came stayed from the very first film all the way through to the final screening.

Even more interestingly, many of them weren’t Film or Media students. They were simply people who were genuinely curious about cinema — about images, editing, sound and how films are actually made.

During the discussion afterwards, the questions became wonderfully practical: What software should I start with? How do I learn editing? How should dialogue be handled? And if I don’t come from a film background, how do I begin making something of my own?

They weren’t grand questions about “breaking into the industry.” They were questions about starting.

And that made today feel particularly meaningful.

This is, in many ways, what we hope Re: Frame can become.

We don’t want to simply bring award-winning films onto a campus, screen them, and leave. We want to create a small bridge between filmmakers and audiences — a space where someone who simply likes movies can sit down, discover work from young filmmakers around the world, ask practical questions, and perhaps realise that making something themselves isn’t as distant as they once imagined.

Sometimes the value of a screening isn’t measured by how many seats are filled.

If someone walks away from tonight curious about editing, inspired by a film they had never heard of, or thinking for the first time, maybe I could make something too — then those three hours mattered.
